EPA awards given to city's wastewater treatment facility
(LAWRENCE, KS) - The Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the City of Lawrence wastewater treatment facility and biosolids program with first place awards. Lawrence Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facility is a two award winner in the Environmental Protection Agency's 2005 National Clean Water Act Recognition Awards Program. Awards were won in the category of operation and maintenance excellence and for exemplary biosolids management.
"Recognition by a national agency for our facility and program is a compliment to the staff that performs the wastewater treatment function daily," said Dave Wagner, utilities department assistant director. "To be recognized with two awards is an accomplishment that is unprecedented. Again, our staff and our community have done the work that earned these EPA awards."
The plant operation and maintenance award recognizes outstanding and innovative technological achievements in wastewater treatment and pollution abatement. The EPA selection for the Exemplary Biosolids Management Awards Program for Small Operating Projects was based on Lawrence's effective long-running recycling program involving the production and use of biosolids for both public distribution and land application.
Applications and nominations for the national award were recommended by EPA regions. The awards program provides national recognition and encourages public support of programs aimed at protecting the public's health and safety and the nation's water quality.
The Environmental Protection Agency will recognize award recipients for outstanding and innovative technological achievements in wastewater treatment and pollution abatement programs at the annual Clean Water Act Recognition Awards ceremony during the Water Environment Federation's Technical Exposition and Conference in Washington, DC on October 31.
An inscribed plaque will be presented to first and second place national winners for projects and programs in operations and maintenance at wastewater treatment facilities, biosolids management, pretreatment and storm water management.
