HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR YOUTH
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has several activities for safe Halloween fun.
On Saturday, Oct. 22, the 34th annual Halloween Paint-In will help decorate storefronts of Downtown Lawrence businesses. The paint-in is for students who are third graders to adults. Sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department and the Lawrence Breakfast Optimists Club, the paint-in allows participants to paint store fronts on local Lawrence merchants' windows from 8 a.m. to noon. Cost is $6 per entry and children should submit a sketch at Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 West 27th St, detailing what they want to paint on a storefront's window. An organizational meeting has been scheduled for all interested participants on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Holcom Park Recreation Center at 7 p.m. Design sketches are due on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. at the Holcom Park Recreation Center. All participants will receive a t-shirt the day of the event. For more information contact Duane Peterson, special events coordinator, at 785-832-7940.
On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Dr., north of Free State High School, will be the site of Spook 'N' Splash from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Cost is $3 for children 3 to 12 years old. There will be candy at several trick or treat stations, as well as games, door prizes and swimming fun. Trick or treat bags will be provided. A costume contest will also look for the scariest, funniest and most original costumes. For more information, contact the Indoor Aquatic Center at 785-832-SWIM.
Saturday, Oct. 29, also features the Saturday Nite's Main Event - Halloween Party at East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St. from 7 to 11 p.m. The party is open to youth in grades 4th through 8th. Activities include: sports, music, dancing and a costume contest. Cost is $6.
On Sunday, Oct. 30, Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., and the Prairie Park Partners are hosting a Halloween Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. at Prairie Park Nature Center. Programs about bats, owls and other creatures of the night will be featured throughout the afternoon. There will be tricks and treats for everyone who attends. Entrance is free and open to the public. The Prairie Park Partners will have games to raise funds to help pay for the nature center's new eagle pen. For more information, contact Marty Birrell, nature interpretive supervisor, at 785-832-7980.
The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department encourages homeowners participating in the annual Halloween Beggar's Night on Monday, Oct. 31, to turn their porch lights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., providing safe trick or treating for costumed youth in the community.
