City hosting Regional Transportation Planning Summit
(LAWRENCE, KS) - Mayor Dennis "Boog" Highberger has invited elected officials, planning and transportation staffs from neighboring communities to a regional transportation planning summit. Recognizing that planning for transportation connections around Lawrence involves state highways that connect beyond Lawrence boundaries to other cities and counties in this region, a discussion of these topics are planned;
- transportation planning visions for the region;
- interest in formalizing a cooperative and on-going planning process for coordination and;
- communication on regional transportation issues and interest in establishing a formal multi-county cooperative for coordination in seeking funding for regional transportation projects.
The summit will be held on Wednesday, November 16 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the City Commission Room, at Lawrence City Hall, 6 E 6th Street, Lawrence, KS.
The Mayor's goal for the summit is to uncover ways to plan and coordinate development for:
- A connection between K10 highway on the east side of Lawrence, across the Kansas River to I-70 and US 24/40 Hwys.
- Connectivity of roads, bike and recreation paths between Douglas, Johnson, and Leavenworth Counties.
- Coordination of transit routes to provide alternative forms of transportation between Lawrence and Johnson County.
- A discussion of the impacts of completing the southern by-pass SLT/K10, or alternatives, from the perspective of the regional transportation network of interconnected highways and roads serving Douglas, Johnson and Leavenworth Counties.
- Establishment of a multi-county/jurisdictional group to lobby for funding for improvements to the state-wide transportation system in the NE area of the state.
- Long-term multi-county working relationship on transportation planning in terms of a long-term vision for the transportation network that serves the cities and counties in this tri-county area.
Invitations have been extended to the following; Johnson County Commissioners and Staff, Sunflower Redevelopment LLC, K10 Smart Corridor, MARC, Johnson County Transit, DeSoto, Douglas County Commissioners and Staff, Lawrence City Commissioners, Lawrence/Douglas County MPO Transportation 2030 Committee, Lawrence/Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Office staff, the Lawrence Transit System administrator, Eudora, Leavenworth County Commission and Staff, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce/ Economic Development Staff, Tonganoxie City Administrator, KDOT representatives, KTA representatives Baldwin City, Overland Park Planning, Olathe and Lenexa Planning and Shawnee Planning.
