Bike Light and Cycling Safety Program
(LAWRENCE, KS) - The KU Public Safety Office and the City of Lawrence announced today that they are partnering with two local bike shops to provide free bicycle lights to cyclists on campus.
Cycle Works, 2121 Kasold Drive and Sunflower Outdoor and Bike, 804 Massachusetts have agreed to provide a light at a discount price and the City of Lawrence will cover the costs for 250 lights.
A properly working light is key to safe cycling. Not only is it key to safety but it's the law as well. Cyclists who do not have a working headlamp are in violation of city traffic laws and could be fined. This project will help increase their safety when they ride at night and make them compliant with this traffic ordinance.
Officers from the KU Public Safety Office will distribute coupons redeemable for a light at either bike shop. Coupon distribution will take place at various locations on campus throughout the fall and again in the spring until all of the coupons have been distributed. Information about traffic ordinances that affect cyclists and other bike safety information will be available also.
Captain Schuyler Bailey of the Public Safety Office stated "We're excited to partner with the city and the bike shops for this program. It allows our officers an opportunity to interact in a very positive way with our students, while providing them information about safe cycling and a light for their bike".
