OUTDOOR PROGRAMS CANCELLED FOR EVENING; POOLS CLOSED
LAWRENCE - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department announces the cancellation of outdoor programs and swimming facilities for the evening due to inclement weather.

The Adult Sports Division's softball league games, held at the Clinton Lake Softball Complex, are being cancelled for the evening and will be rescheduled for a date in the future. All Adult Sport Division dodgeball and volleyball games will be held as scheduled.

The Youth Sports Division's softball and baseball programs have been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

The Recreation Instruction Division's tennis programs, held at the Lawrence Tennis Center, located at 21st and Virginia Sts., have been cancelled for tonight and will be rescheduled at a later date.

The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Kentucky St., will be closed for the day and will reopen at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will remain open but may be closed temporarily throughout the evening due to lightning in the area.

Lawrence Parks and Recreation follow strict guidelines involving lightning safety. Staff use lightning detection systems, visual identification and support from the National Weather Service in Topeka to maintain swimmer safety. When lightning is detected within three miles of any swimming pool, indoor and outdoor, all swimmers are asked to exit the water and take shelter within the facility. Safety prompts and instruction are given by the lifeguard staff.
