Water Reclamation Facility steps into January
(LAWRENCE, Ks) - As the Wakarusa Water Reclamation Facility progresses, a wetlands seminar and public meeting will be held in January. The community will have the opportunity to hear from national wetlands expert Dr. Robert Kadlec. Dr. Kadlec will discuss wetland treatment systems including factors affecting wetland treatment system design and operation and the potential to incorporate wetland treatment systems into the Wakarusa Water Reclamation Facility.
The public is invited to Kadlec's wetlands seminar on Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 3 to 4p.m. in the City Commission Room of City Hall, 6 East Sixth Street. Kadlec, Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering, University of Michigan and Principle with Wetland Management Services in Chelsea, Michigan has participated in the design of over 100 wetland treatment systems, and conducted feasibility studies for many others.
The second of three meetings public meetings planned for the coming months to solicit public input on a new water reclamation facility south of Lawrence will be at 7 p.m. Monday, January 23 in the auditorium at South Junior High School, 2734 Louisiana. The city invites the community to attend. City and consulting staff will be on hand to provide a brief overview of the need for a new facility, criteria to be considered in identifying the facility location and to discuss site selection criteria and the rankings process.
Information on the work underway on the Wakarusa Water Reclamation Facility project is available at www.lawrenceks.org. Meeting agendas and summaries as well as frequently asked questions are included on the site. For additional information, call Debbie Van Saun at (785) 832-3400 or dvansaun at ci.lawrence.ks.us.
The Wakarusa Water Reclamation Facility is a recommendation in the 2003 Wastewater Master Plan. The plan evaluated projected growth and the impact on the wastewater collection and treatment systems. Construction of a second water reclamation facility was recommended after considering the current level of wastewater flows being treated, projected increase in wastewater flows, transporting and treating, changes in State and Federal requirements and existing plant capacity.
