Celebrate Communities in Motion Day with Free Rides on the "T"
(Lawrence, KS) - On Thursday, October 7, 2004, the Lawrence Transit System
will join in the national celebration of Communities in Motion Day. The
event is to educate, promote and celebrate the benefits of public
transportation.
The Lawrence Transit System will provide free rides to celebrate Communities
in Motion Day on Thursday, October 7, 2004. Transit staff will be randomly
distributing ridership appreciation bags throughout the day. The Lawrence
Public Library children's section is highlighting Communities in Motion by
having their October theme be Things that Move. Things that Move will
highlight the October 4th - 8th weekly reading time as well as a book
display.
Public transportation benefits the community by stimulating economic
development, creating jobs, easing traffic congestion, reduces energy
consumption as well as fostering more livable communities. In 2002,
Americans took more than 9.4 billion trips by public transportation.
According to American Public Transportation Association data, work is the
most popular destination with 54 percent of all trips ending at work places.
Next most popular, 15 percent of trips go to schools, 9 percent to shop, 9
percent for social visits; and 5 percent for medical appointments.
First time riders will find that transit drivers are an excellent resource
for information. Drivers can help with transfers and explanation of timing
points. For assistance with trip planning call 312-7054 or visit
www.lawrencetransit.org to see a route map and timetable.
