FITNESS CLASSES GETS KIDS MOVING
LAWRENCE - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has upcoming class
offerings for youth involving fitness.

Yoga for Kids will be held on Wednesdays, Nov. 10 through Dec. 15, from 4:45
to 5:30 p.m. for children ages 3 to 5 at South Park Recreation Center.  A
section is also available for children ages 6 to 10 from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.
Cost of the five-week program is $19.

Children will learn yoga positions that help improve good posture and
coordination. All activities will promote strength and flexibility.
Different techniques will also be taught to quiet minds and recharge energy.

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes will be held on Wednesdays, Nov. 10 through
Dec. 15, from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. at the Community Building, Dance Studio.  It
is open to children ages 3 to 5 years old. Cost of the five-week program is
$17. 

Children will learn creativity through rhythmical movement to music by
games, simple exercises, dancing and movement songs. The class is designed
to enhance a child's development through coordination and social skills.

TURKEY TROT ENTRIES BEING ACCEPTED
LAWRENCE- Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is hosting its annual
Turkey Trot, 5K run/walk, Saturday, Nov. 6, beginning at 9 a.m. on the
campus of Haskell Indian Nations University.

The race is open to all ages and the entry fee is $16 prior to the race, and
$17 on the day of the race.  Day-of-race entries will be accepted from 7:30
to 8:30 a.m. Division winners will receive turkeys from Checkers Foods, 2300
Louisiana St., with overall male and female winners receiving $50 gift
certificates from Jock's Nitch Sporting Goods, 837 Massachusetts St.

REMINDER: HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR YOUTH
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has several
activities for safe Halloween fun.

On Saturday, Oct. 30, the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland
Drive, north of Free State High School, will be the site of Spook 'N' Splash
from 6 to 7:45 p.m. with a costume contest beginning at 6:15 p.m. Cost for
costume contest is $3 for children 3 to 12 years old. There will be candy at
several trick or treat stations, as well as games, door prizes and swimming
fun. Trick or treat bags will be provided. For more information, contact the
Indoor Aquatic Center at 785-832-SWIM.

On Sunday, Oct. 31, Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., and the
Prairie Park Partners are hosting a Halloween Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. at
Prairie Park Nature Center. There will be tricks and treats for everyone who
attends. Entrance is free and open to the public. The Prairie Park Partners
will have games. For more information, contact Marty Birrell, nature
interpretive supervisor, at 785-832-7980.

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department encourages homeowners
participating in the annual Halloween Beggar's Night on Sunday, Oct. 31, to
turn their porch lights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., providing safe trick or
treating for costumed youth in the community.

INDOOR AQUATIC CENTER'S COMPETITION POOL CLOSED DUE TO SWIM MEET
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Indoor Aquatic
Center, Competition Pool, will be unavailable to the public starting today,
Friday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m. due to the Jerry Laws Olathe Spooktacular swim
meet, which is being hosted by the Aquatics Division. The Competition Pool
will reopen on Monday, Nov. 1, at 5:15 a.m.

The Family pool will be available for public swim at its regularly scheduled
hours:   Friday, 3:30 to 7:45 p.m.; Saturday, 1 to 7:45 p.m. and Sunday, 1
to 5:45 p.m. 

Additional lap swimming hours will be made available at the Carl Knox
Natatorium, 1901 Louisiana St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30,
and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31. 

There is no admission being charged for the swim meet, so the public is
invited to attend and support Lawrence swimmers competing in the meet.
