HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR YOUTH
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has several
activities for safe Halloween fun.

On Saturday, Oct. 23, the 33rd annual Halloween Paint-In will help decorate
Downtown business storefronts.  The Paint-In is for students who are third
graders through seniors in high school. Adults may also participate in the
program. 

Sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department and the Lawrence Breakfast
Optimists Club, the Paint-In will allow participants to paint store fronts
on local Lawrence merchants' windows from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $6 per
entry and children must submit a sketch of their design at Holcom Park
Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St., detailing what they want to paint on a
storefront's window. All participants must attend an organizational meeting
on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Holcom Park Recreation Center. Each
participant will receive a t-shirt the day of the event. Registration for
the Paint-In will end on Wednesday Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. For more

On Saturday, Oct. 30, the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland
Drive, north of Free State High School, will be the site of Spook 'N' Splash
from 6 to 7:45 p.m. with a costume contest beginning at 6:15 p.m. Cost for
costume contest is $3 for children 3 to 12 years old. There will be candy at
several trick or treat stations, as well as games, door prizes and swimming
fun. Trick or treat bags will be provided. For more information, contact the
Indoor Aquatic Center at 785-832-SWIM.

On Sunday, Oct. 31, Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., and the
Prairie Park Partners are hosting a Halloween Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. at
Prairie Park Nature Center. There will be tricks and treats for everyone who
attends. Entrance is free and open to the public. The Prairie Park Partners
will have games. For more information, contact Marty Birrell, nature

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department encourages homeowners
participating in the annual Halloween Beggar's Night on Sunday, Oct. 31, to
turn their porch lights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., providing safe trick or
treating for costumed youth in the community.

FALL KICKBALL CLASSIC REGISTRATION ENDING SOON
LAWRENCE -Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Adult Sports Division
still has spots available in its 2004 Fall Kickball Classic. The Kickball
Classic is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23, at noon at the Clinton Lake
Softball Complex, 5101 Speicher Road. 

The Fall Kickball Classic is a coed, double elimination tournament open to
individuals 16 years old or older. Teams must have a minimum of eight and a
maximum of 10 individuals on the playing field.
Teams must also field an equal number of men and women, but all players on
the roster may kick. 

Cost of participation is $75 per team. Registration deadline is Wednesday,
Oct. 20. Registrations can be made at the Community Building, 115 W. 11th
St. or online at www.lprd.org <http://www.lprd.org> .

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams.  For more

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS FAIR PLANNED
LAWRENCE - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Aquatic Division will
be conducting a Breast Cancer Awareness Fair on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 9
a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive.

A browsing area will be available with information from local agencies and
businesses about breast cancer prevention and treatment, as well as
information about breast cancer support groups.  

At 10:45 a.m., Dianna Swatsenbarg, a registered nurse, will be speaking
about the 12th anniversary of the Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer Dance,
which is being held later in the evening at the Lawrence Holiday Inn
Holidome. Proceeds will benefit the mammography services and the new
Lawrence Memorial Hospital's Breast Center. For more information on the
dance, individuals should contact 840-2830.

At 11 a.m., Kelly Robinson, a physical therapist from Lawrence Memorial
Hospital's Kreider Rehabilitation Service, will discuss a water therapy
class designed specifically for women who have had mastectomies.

Throughout the day, the Aquatic Division will continue its support of breast
cancer awareness by donating $1 of each daily admission to the new Oncology
Department at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

RED RIBBON WEEK TO BE CELEBRATED
LAWRENCE - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Aquatic Division will
be celebrating Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31 in an effort keep kids off drugs.

By filling out a drug-free pledge card and decorating a ribbon that will be
hung in the Indoor Aquatic Center's lobby, children will receive a coupon
for one free admission to swim at the Indoor Aquatic Center throughout the
month of October.

In prelude to the week's celebration, the Aquatic Division will hold a Kid's
Night Out program on Thursday, Oct. 21, for children ages 5 to 12. Cost to
attend is $15 and includes games, prizes, pizza and a visit from a local
police officer.
