NEW TOT LOT PLAYGROUND BEING CREATED IN SOUTH PARK
LAWRENCE - A new tot lot playground is being installed in historic South
Park, 1141 Massachusetts St., just south of the existing playground.
Construction is scheduled to be completed this fall.
The fire truck playground piece, which was removed recently from the park,
is being refurbished and will return to the new area once it has been
repaired.
South Park was established in 1854 and is Lawrence's first and most historic
park. In the original town plat, South Park covered eight city blocks and
was divided evenly into four separate parks: Lafayette Park, Hamilton Park,
Washington Park, and Franklin Park.
In 1910, President Theodore Roosevelt was on hand to dedicate a
rehabilitated, old granite fountain. The fountain still resides on the east
side of the park today.
For more information on Lawrence's parks, please contact the Parks and
Recreation Department at 832-3450.
