A call for volunteers
(Lawrence, Ks) - Able bodied Lawrence residents with a flare for helping
others and an enjoyment of winter weather are needed to volunteer for the
"Safe Winter Walkways" program. To create safer and more accessible
pedestrian walkways, the City of Lawrence has joined with Roger Hill
Volunteer Center to create the pilot program. The design is to match folks
needing assistance with snow removal with volunteers who want to do a
neighborly good deed.
Registration now will allow volunteers to be assigned a match before the
next snow event of the season. Volunteers will be asked to commit to the
winter season and visit his or her matched home each time snow falls.
"It is tough to keep snow removal in the forefront of the community's mind
when we only occasionally experience snow fall. However, each time the
sidewalks become covered, an obstacle is created for pedestrians," said Mike
Wildgen, city manager. "The program is a structured version of what has
happened in neighborhoods for many years, neighbors helping neighbors. This
year we want to make certain that the neighbors can count on a volunteer to
be there if snow needs to be removed."
Volunteers can sign up by calling 832-3338 or registering online at
