City says "tree-cycling" helps our environment

(Lawrence, Kansas) - The City of Lawrence Solid Waste Division crews will
collect live-cut Christmas trees for recycling from local households on
Monday, December 27; Monday, January 3; and Monday, January 10. The trees
will become new homes for area wildlife.

Residents are asked to set their trees out by 6 a.m. on one of these three
collection days.

To prepare the trees for use by wildlife, remove all lights, decorations,
tinsel, ornaments, and tree stands. The tree may be placed next to your
regular trash container for Monday pickup. Those serviced by dumpsters
should place the tree beside the dumpster.

Christmas trees from the 2004 holiday season will be collected and
wind-rowed for wildlife habitat at the old closed landfill north of
Lawrence. Tree-cycling makes a positive difference. Over the last five
years, more than 196 tons or about 15,500 Christmas trees were collected,
processed and used as erosion control and wildlife habitat. That is an
average of 39.2 tons of trees reused instead of land filled each year.

Consider making tree-cycling part of your family's holiday tradition and
putting a little green back in the City of Lawrence.
