TEAMWORK AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department announces the
recipients of the 2004 Tom Wilkerson Teamwork Awards.

Lisa Hughes, aquatics program clerk of Lawrence Parks and Recreation's
Aquatics Division; Wilma Elder, part-time fitness instructor for Parks and
Recreation and Clenece Hills, Lawrence Sesquicentennial Commission
chairperson, are the Category I, II and III recipients of the award
respectively. 

The Wilkerson Teamwork Award, established in 1999, has three categories:
Category I is given to a full-time individual or group of full-time
employees who exemplify teamwork; Category II is given to a part-time
employee or group of part-time employees who exemplify teamwork; and
Category III is for an outside agency or City department, individual or
group who has assisted the department in obtaining success.

Nominations are taken from employees and are then reviewed by a committee
selected by the director of the department.  Recipients are then announced
at the department's annual holiday luncheon. 

Hughes, who began working with the department in August 2000, was nominated
for providing support and assistance to those within the aquatic division.
Hills was nominated for her work on putting together the celebration for
Lawrence's 150 years as a city, while Elder was nominated for her 22 years
of fitness instruction with the department 

Other nominees included:  Category I: Rick Caldwell, 2nd assistant golf
course superintendent; Jo Ellis, recreation instruction supervisor; Tim
Laurent, facilities operations supervisor; Shannon McCoy, administrative
clerk II; Jerrod Nickelson, trades technician II, Brent Hill, field
supervisor, Karen Risner, administrative clerk I and Lu Bermudez, secretary.

Other Category II nominees included:  Marianne Carter, part-time instructor.

Other Category III nominees included: Mark Bradford, deputy director of the
Lawrence Fire and Medical Department and Bill Self, University of Kansas
head men's basketball coach. 

The Teamwork Award was renamed in 2002 to honor Tom Wilkerson who served as
assistant director of the department until his retirement in October 2002.
