City offices to observe holidays on December 24 and December 31; Parks and
Recreation facilities announce holiday schedules

(LAWRENCE, KANSAS) -- City offices will be closed Friday, December 24 and
Friday, December 31, in observance of the holidays.

The Lawrence Transit System and the T Lift will operate Friday, December 24
and Friday, December 31 and will not run on Saturday, December 25 and
Saturday, January 1.

Commercial solid waste routes will be made on Friday, December 24 and
Friday, December 31.  Commercial routes will not be made on December 25 and
January 1.  No residential pick ups are scheduled for Fridays or Saturdays.

Parking at meters in downtown Lawrence will be free on Friday, December 24
and Saturday, December 25 as well as Friday, December 31 and Saturday,
January 1.

To report a water or sewer emergency after business hours or during weekends
and holidays, contact the Utilities Department at (785) 843-2685.

Parks and Recreation announces hours of operation for the upcoming holidays.
Recreation Centers:  
South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Massachusetts St., will be closed through
Sunday, Jan. 9, for remodeling. It will reopen with it normal hours of
operation on Monday, Jan. 10, which are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation
Center, 2700 W. 27th St. and the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St. will be
open:

Monday, Dec. 20, through Friday, Jan. 7	7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, (M-F).
The facilities will be open on Saturdays and Sundays at their normal hours
of operation. They will, however, have altered hours on the following days:

Friday, Dec. 24  		8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 25		Closed
Friday, Dec. 31 		8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 1		Closed

 Since there are no classes or sports scheduled Free Play hours will be
available the entire time the centers will be open. The centers will resume
normal operation hours on Saturday, Jan. 8, which are:

East Lawrence Recreation Center: 
7 a.m. to 10 p.m.  - Monday through Thursday
7 a.m. to 9 p.m. - Fridays
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. - Saturdays
1 to 6 p.m. - Sundays

			1:30 to 5 p.m.  - Monday through Thursday
			10 a.m. to 6 p.m. - Saturdays

Adult Sports:  League play is over for the Fall season.  Winter league play
for Adult Basketball and Volleyball begins Saturday, Jan. 15. 

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will have the following
alternate hours:

Friday, Dec. 24		9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 25		Closed
Friday, Dec. 31		9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 1		Closed

They will resume normal operating hours beginning on Sunday, Jan. 2, which
are:
Mondays - Closed
		Tuesdays through Saturday - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
		Sundays - 1 to 4 p.m.

Aquatic Division  
Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive.

Sunday - 1 to 5:45 p.m.

Waterslide and Diving Area
Monday - Friday - 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Saturday - 1 to 7:30 p.m.
Sunday - 1 to 5:30 p.m.

Warm Water Lap Swim will take place daily, Monday through Friday, from 12 to
2 p.m. 

Zero Depth and Children's Area
Monday - Friday (except Wednesday) - 3:30 to 7:45 p.m.
Wednesday - 2:30 to 7:45 p.m.
Saturday - 1 to 7:45 p.m.
Sunday - 1 to 5:45 p.m.

Carl Knox Natatorium, located on the campus of Lawrence High School, will be
closed  Dec. 20 through Jan. 3.  It will reopen with its normal operating
hours on Tuesday, Jan. 4, which are: 

Monday through Thursday - 6:15 to 8:30 p.m.
Friday through Sunday - Closed

Recreation Instruction:  There are no classes meeting during the holidays.
Winter program and Classes begin Sunday, Jan. 9.

Special Events:  There will be the following Special Events programming for
children ages 5 to 12 years old running during the holiday season:

Holiday Parents Day Out - Monday through Friday, Dec. 20 to 24, at Holcom
Park Recreation Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Holiday Happenings - Monday through Friday, Dec. 27 to 31, at Holcom Park
Recreation Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

New Year's Overnighter - Friday to Saturday, Dec. 31 to Jan. 1 at Holcom
Park Recreation Center from 8 p.m. (Dec. 31) to 8 a.m. (Jan. 1)

All Special Events require pre-registration.  For more information, contact
Duane Peterson, Special Events supervisor, at 832-7940.

Youth Sports - There are youth leagues in session. Soccer/Futsal winter
league play begins February 5. Deadline for registration is Monday, Jan. 3.

Eagle Bend Golf Course And Learning Center -  Will close at noon on
Thursday, Dec. 23, and reopen on Monday, Dec. 27 at its normal winter hours
of operation, which are  9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (weather permitting).  It will
hold its normal hours of operation for Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1.
