Mayor looking for excellent educators

(Lawrence, Kansas) - Lawrence students, parents and teachers are encouraged
to nominate an educator for the Fall 2003 Mayor's Excellence in Education
Award.

Students, families and colleagues have the opportunity to recognize Lawrence
educators who demonstrate excellence in education, leadership and community
involvement. The annual award demonstrates the connection between
successful communities, thriving students and committed educators.
Individuals making a nomination are asked to tell the Mayor why the educator
is being nominated and to describe the educator's involvement in community
organizations and activities.

Educators serving pre-schools or elementary schools, junior high schools and
high schools may be nominated. Nomination forms are available on the city's
website at www.lawrenceks.org or in the City Manager's Office on the fourth
floor of City Hall, 6 E Sixth Street. The simplicity of form is intended to
capture the essence of the educator's excellence and encourage people to
make the nomination.

The nomination deadline for fall semester is Friday, January 9, 2004. The
awards will be presented in late January and award recipients will receive a
commemorative tower and be recognized at school board and city commission
meetings.

In May 2003, Mr. George "Skip" Bennett, Southwest Junior High and Ms. Jane
Imber, Quail Run Elementary School received the award. Mr. Frank Hoffmann,
Cordley Elementary School and Michael Ortmann, Lawrence High School were
award recipients in January 2003.
