"EMERGENCE" INSTALLED TODAY IN WATSON PARK
LAWRENCE - The product of last year's Kansas Sculpture Association Stone
Symposium, which was held in Lawrence, and sponsored by Lawrence Parks and
Recreation Department, Bayer Stone, Inc. and the Kansas Sculpture
Association, will be installed in Buford Watson Park, located at 6th St. and
Kentucky St., this morning.
"Emergence," a concept of Lawrence artist Edd Ortiz, was selected as the
project of the symposium last year and has recently been completed. The
sculpture was accepted as a gift by the Lawrence City Commission in June
2002 and last October the City Commission approved placing the artwork north
of 7th St. in Watson Park.
In his original submission, Ortiz described "Emergence" as a conceptual
piece with a hint of the biomorphic.
The sculpture has a main column that rises upwards with a slight curve.
Situated at the top of the main column is a large pod. Surrounding the main
column is a series of undulating fingers or leaves.
The "Kansas Stone Symposium" was started in 1984 to gather stone
craftspeople together and create lasting monuments to Kansas heritage held
in different host cities every two years.
Bayer Stone, Inc., and the Kansas Sculpture Association have worked together
and provided sculptures to communities around the state, which includes "The
Buffalo," located on Clinton Parkway in Lawrence, which was a gift to the
City in 1988, the last time the symposium had been held in Lawrence.
Other works in other communities include "Clouds" in Manhattan;
"Grasshopper" in Hutchinson; "Flight" in Wichita; "The Presence of 3" in St.
Marys and "Windows to the West" in Atchison.
