CLASS TO TEACH FIRST AID TECHNIQUES TO LITTLE PEOPLE
LAWRENCE - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Recreation Instruction
Division is offering a hands-on first aid class called "First Aid for Little
People," which is specially designed for children from 5 to 12 years of age.
The course will be held on Thursday, Sept. 25 and Oct. 2 and costs $14 per
child. Pre-registration is required.

The two, two-hour long classes focus on very simple procedures that can help
children stay calm and in control if they fall off their bike or the jungle
gym at the park. Some of the topics include: how the body reacts to a cut,
the importance of cleaning a wound and putting on a bandage, as well as
staying calm during traumatic situations.

"Children build self confidence by having first aid and safety training," Jo
Ellis, recreation supervisor, said. "It helps them become leaders on the
playground or around their neighborhood because they know what to do if
someone needs assistance."

The class will cover how children should use the phone in the event they
have to call 911. Each child will also receive a book and other supplies
used in the class to take home.

The sessions will also cover choking and the hazards of eating on the run.

"The children will hear the safety tips that their parents have been giving
them on a daily basis," Ellis said. "Sometimes children are more receptive
when they hear them from someone else."

To register for First Aid for Little People, individuals can enroll online
at www.lprd.org or they can visit a Lawrence Parks and Recreation facility,
