COMMUNITY BUILDING TO BE CLOSED FOR QUILT SHOW
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Community
Building, 115 West 11th St., gymnasium will be closed to the public for
recreational use Sept. 12 - 14 due to the Lawrence Quilter's Guild annual
quilt show. The center will close at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, and will
reopen for use Monday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m.
The closing includes the gymnasium, weight room, locker rooms and
racquetball courts.
Reservations and registrations for upcoming programs can still be made
on-site in the administrative offices. If you have questions regarding the
Community Building, contact Craig Houfek, Community Building/SPC recreation
supervisor, at 785-832-7920.
Citizens are advised of other recreation facilities which will be operating
on their regular schedules.
East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th St., will be open Friday
from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to
6 p.m. with free play scheduled from 1:30 to 5 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6
p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St., will be open Friday from 7
a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.
with free play scheduled from 1:30 to 5 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
on Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Each center has a full-size gymnasium, game room, weight room, racquetball
court and locker room/shower facilities.

FALL ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL PLANNED
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the 24th
annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival Sunday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. at South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. The festival is free and open to
the public.
Over 150 artists and craftspeople are scheduled to be exhibiting arts and
crafts for sale to the public.
There will also be special activities for children including a moon
walk/slide, train and pony rides, and a supervised paint and play pen. In
addition, the children's wading pool will be open if weather is favorable.
Musicians will be performing on the William Kelly Bandstand throughout the
afternoon. Scheduled to perform include:
Noon - Billy Spears Band
1 p.m. - Billy Ebeling and the Late for Dinner Band
2 p.m. - Lonnie Ray's Blues Band
3 p.m. - Kuk Sool Won (Martial Arts Demonstration
4 p.m. - Keywest Jazz Quartet
Registrations for Exhibitors are still being accepted. Cost to exhibit is
$30. Exhibitors are responsible for providing display units, but table and
fence panels are available for rent on a first-come/first-serve basis at a
charge of $15. Deadline for registering as an exhibitor is Friday, Sept. 12.

MASS STREET MILE TO BE RUN
LAWRENCE - In conjunction with the Fall Arts and Crafts Festival, the
Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the Mass Street Mile,
Sunday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. The race will start at South Park, 1141
Massachusetts St., and will run along Massachusetts through Downtown
Lawrence.
Adults and children are encouraged to enter. Awards will be given to
division winners. Cost to participate is $12 for adults and $10 for
children. Participants are asked to pre-register at any Lawrence Parks and
Recreation Center including: the Community Building, 115 West 11th St.;
East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation
Center, 2700 West 27th St.; Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland
Drive; Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St. or South Park Recreation
Center, 1141 Massachusetts St. Registrations on the day of the race will
include a $1 late fee.
Participants will receive a t-shirt. Race packets for registered
participants can be picked up prior to the race at Francis Sporting Goods,
731 Massachusetts St., on Friday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and
Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On the day of the race, packets
will be distributed at South Park from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
