FITNESS RESOLUTION EASIER TO KEEP WHEN WORKOUTS ADDED TO DAILY ROUTINE
LAWRENCE -Millions of Americans make resolutions at the turn of the new year
to challenge bad habits, or to develop new, positive outlooks on health,
relationships and life.
Many times resolutions deal with weight loss, eating habits and exercising
more. But as life's challenges and everyday stresses enter the picture, good
intentions are pushed down on the priority list and often fade deeper in the
psyche after only a couple of weeks of actively pursuing a goal or change
desired.
If someone wanted to become more physically fit in the new year, they could
make an active attempt to achieve their desired goal by making a true
commitment to their resolution by developing a new routine integrating
physical activity into their weekly schedule. Through the Lawrence Parks
and Recreation Department's Winter and Spring Activities, many will be
making a commitment to be successful through participation in one of the
many offerings of physical fitness activities.
One offering from the Aquatic Division is a new program called Swim for
Shape. The program, developed by Rob Wyrick, aquatic programmer, was
designed to give individuals extra incentive to stick to their resolutions.
Participants who register receive a mileage log that is kept on file at the
Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive. Goals are set by participants
each month and their swimming mileage is tracked. Participants receive a
newsletter with fitness tips and upcoming fitness programs at the Aquatic
Center, and awards are given to individuals who attain their goals. There
is no cost to participate in the program, except for the regular charges for
daily admission into the pool.
"Swim for Shape give our patrons an opportunity for structure in their
swimming workouts," Wyrick said. "The program is designed to give them
motivation, as well as accountability to stick with their workout."
Wyrick also says popular classes like Water Aerobics and Water Walking are
also opportunities for people to make commitments to their health and would
provide the necessary structure for a person to be successful for a healthy
New Year's resolution.
Out of the water, there are other opportunities for physical activities to
keep in shape too.
Besides traditional aerobic classes, Jo Ellis, recreation supervisor, said
there are several new courses designed to tone, strengthen and give people
the workout they desire.
New programs like Total Body Workout and Cardio Combat are designed to work
all the major muscle groups and burn calories and stress. Cardio Combat also
incorporates authentic boxing techniques into the workout to strengthen the
upper body and abdomen.
"We added Total Body Workout because a survey of program participants
indicated a need for the class at 4:30 p.m. for teachers," Ellis said. "The
Kickboxing class was so popular that we added Cardio Combat to compliment
it. By adding the course, a person could get a great workout four days a
week. "
Both Wyrick and Ellis caution individuals to consult a physician before
entering into a fitness program to assure the individual that the program is
right for them.
