Mayor announces Excellence in Education Award

(Lawrence, Kansas) - The Mayor and City of Lawrence are introducing the
Mayor's Excellence in Education Award.  The award provides students,
families and colleagues the opportunity to recognize Lawrence educators who
demonstrate excellence in education, leadership and community involvement.  

Each semester of the school year, educators serving pre-schools or
elementary schools, junior high schools and high schools may be nominated.
Award recipients will receive a commemorative plaque and be recognized at
school and a City Commission meeting.

Individuals making a nomination are asked to tell the Mayor why the educator
is being nominated and to describe the educator's involvement in community
organizations and activities.

The inaugural award will be presented in January 2003.  Nominations are
being sought from students, families and colleagues.  A brief nomination
form is required and may be downloaded from the City's website at
www.lawrenceks.org or pick up a form in the City Manager's Office on the
fourth floor of City Hall, 6 E Sixth Street.  Nomination forms are also
being distributed to elementary students in Lawrence Public Schools.

The nomination deadline for recognition of first semester is January 20,
2003.  A selection committee, including the Mayor, a City Commissioner, and
representatives from USD #497, Lawrence Education Association and City Staff
will review nominations and select the recipients.
