TRAIL, PRESERVE TO BE OFFICIALLY REOPENED AT CEREMONY
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will be holding
an opening ceremony for the newly renovated trail system within the
Viola and Conrad McGrew Nature Preserve, 4600 West 15th St., Saturday,
Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. along the north trail entrance at Inverness Drive.
The public is invited to attend.
A short ceremony will recognize the gift and renovations of the trail
and bridges made to the City by life-long Lawrence resident John McGrew.
McGrew donated the land in 1986 and named it in honor of his parents.
An avid outdoors person, McGrew donated the 15-acre greenbelt to serve
as a natural buffer between a residential development and a business
park. To further enhance the land, he helped fund the development of
trails and bridges in the area. McGrew has made two other donations of
land to the Parks and Recreation Department.
Mayor of Lawrence Sue Hack will officially declare the trail reopened,
which will be followed by a hike of the trail. In the event of inclement
weather, the ceremony will be rescheduled for a later date.
