Public invited to art dedication
(LAWRENCE, KANSAS) - The Lawrence Arts Commission invites the Lawrence
community to the dedication ceremony of the Halcyon Screen, a sculpture
by Dan Rockhill, on Saturday, November 16 at 9:30 a.m. at the Lawrence
Douglas County Fire Medical Station No. 2, 2128 Harper Street.
Designed by Rockhill and Associates, the piece represents the protection
the firefighters provide the community. The artist will attend the
dedication to talk with visitors and answer questions.
The dedication also marks the completion of the work by the selection
committee from the Lawrence Art Commission. A group of Lawrence Arts
Commissioners worked for several months to set criteria for the art,
place the call for proposals, review applications and select the art
piece.
The sculpture was funded by the City's "Percent for Art" Program.
Nationally recognized as one of the finest small arts communities, our
City has an active Percent for Art program. Capital improvement monies
are set aside for art projects in new city construction and major
renovations. The City's Arts Commission is responsible for choosing the
art and artist for each project.
