RETIREMENT RECEPTION FOR WILKERSON PLANNED
LAWRENCE - A retirement reception for Tom Wilkerson, assistant director
of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, has been scheduled for
Friday, Nov. 8, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Lawrence Union Pacific Depot,
402 North Second St. The public is invited to attend.

Wilkerson has been employed by the City of Lawrence for 18 =BD years,
providing leadership to the Parks and Recreation Department. His last
day with the City will be Friday, Nov. 15, 2002. He began his tenure
with the department as the superintendent of recreation and in 1989 was
promoted to the assistant director of the department.=20
=20
Coming to Lawrence in 1973, he served as the director of Recreational
Services at the University of Kansas. During his tenure at KU, he was a
member of the design team for Robinson Center and was responsible for
equipping the facility. He also became an assistant professor and =
taught
classes in recreation administration.

Prior to KU, Wilkerson worked for the State of Missouri's Interagency
Council of Outdoor Recreation and was responsible for the review and
funding of grant monies provided by the U.S. Department of Interior. He
has also worked at Southwest Missouri State University in recreational
services and served four years in the U.S. Air Force.

He has served on several civic boards and organizations within the
community including the Boys and Girls Club and the Achievement Place
for Boys. He's a member of Kiwanis and the Kansas Recreation and Parks
Association and served as president of both in 1990.

He received the Buford M. Watson, Jr. Public Service Award in 1995 from
the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and received the Distinguished
Professional Award from the Kansas Recreation and Parks Association in
1990.

Wilkerson received a bachelor's degree in recreational administration
from Southwest Missouri State University and a master's in physical
education with an emphasis in recreation administration from the
University of Kansas.

He and his wife, Vicki, have two daughters: Melissa who lives in =
Parker,
Colo., working as a child victims' advocate for the District Attorney's
Office in Denver, and Maegan Lee, who lives in Salina, Kan., with her
husband Derrick, who is sales manager at Long MacArthur Ford, and their
son, Keeton.
