PUBLIC INPUT SOUGHT FOR PARK DEVELOPMENT
LAWRENCE - Citizens still have an opportunity to provide input to the
Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department for the master plan of a
regional park being developed for the 1515 acre, leased area from the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, east of the dam at Clinton Lake.

A display detailing the area involved for the regional park development
is set up at the Parks and Recreation Department office, 947 New
Hampshire St., Suite 200B, for public review. Those interested are
invited to look at and review materials, as well as discuss with Parks
and Recreation Department staff their personal ideas for the regional
park's development over the next 10 to 20 years. The display will remain
available until Thursday, Nov. 7.

Those not able to stop by on-site are asked to submit their questions or
concerns to Fred DeVictor, director of the Parks and Recreation
Department, by phone at 785-832-3451 or e-mail at
fdevictor@ci.lawrence.ks.us.

At several public outreach meetings held over the past two weeks, public
discussion has involved improvement of traffic patterns in and out of
the park area, as well as other infrastructure necessities for water and
electricity. Ideas for park usage gathered so far in the
information-gathering process include: development of additional youth
and adult soccer fields; additional youth and adult baseball and
softball fields; a public area for events and festivals; an
amphitheater; an additional skate park and disc golf course; additional
playground areas; an expansion of Eagle Bend Golf Course with 9 to 18
additional holes; preservation areas of native grass and wildlife;
additional hiking and biking trail systems; remote control car and
airplane areas; an equestrian trail and additional picnic and shelter
areas.

The development of a Sesquicentennial Plaza, has also been discussed.
The City Commission last April approved the concept of the plaza
celebrating the 150th anniversary in 2004 of Lawrence's founding. The
idea of a plaza leading to a feature within the park, such as an
amphitheater, has been raised by the Lawrence 150 Horizons committee.

A public meeting, Monday, Nov. 18, at the East Lawrence Recreation
Center, 1245 East 15th St., at 7 p.m. will review the ideas generated
for the possible uses of the park area. The presentation will be
conducted by Landplan Engineering, which has been contracted for
planning and designing the park. Discussion and input will also take
place regarding the ideas generated by the public over the month long,
information-gathering period. The final plan will be developed and
presented in late December or early January at a public meeting. The
date, time and location will be announced at a later date.

The development of the 1515 acre, leased area is part of the
comprehensive plan adopted by the Lawrence City Commission last year. In
the plan, it recommended establishing a regional park utilizing the
advantages of the Clinton Lake environment and providing facilities for
events that cannot be accommodated in other parks in the system.

HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR COMMUNITY
LAWRENCE - The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has several
activities for safe Halloween fun.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the 31st annual Halloween Paint-In will help
decorate storefronts of area businesses. The paint-in is for students
who are third graders through seniors in high school. Sponsored by the
Parks and Recreation Department and the Lawrence Breakfast Optimists
Club, the paint-in will allow participants to paint store fronts on
local Lawrence merchants' windows from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $5 per
entry and children should submit a sketch at Holcom Park Recreation
Center, 2700 West 27th St, detailing what they want to paint on a
storefront's window. All participants will receive a t-shirt the day of
the event. For more information contact Duane Peterson, special events
coordinator, at 785-832-7940.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland
Drive, north of Free State High School, will be the site of Spook 'N'
Splash from 5 to 8:45 p.m. Cost is $3 for children 3 to 12 years old and
$3.75 for individuals 13 years old or older. There will be candy at
several trick or treat stations, as well as games, door prizes and
swimming fun. Trick or treat bags will be provided. For more
information, contact the Indoor Aquatic Center at 785-832-SWIM.

On Sunday, Oct. 27, Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., and the
Prairie Park Partners are hosting a Halloween Open House from 1 to 4
p.m. at Prairie Park Nature Center. Programs about bats, owls and other
creatures of the night will be featured throughout the afternoon. There
will be tricks and treats for everyone who attends. Entrance is free and
open to the public. The Prairie Park Partners will have games to raise
funds to help pay for the nature center's new eagle pen. For more
information, contact Marty Birrell, nature interpretive supervisor, at
785-832-7980.

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department encourages homeowners
participating in the annual Halloween Beggar's Night on Thursday, Oct.
31, to turn their porch lights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., providing safe
trick or treating for costumed youth in the community.
