Fall biosolid application to begin
(LAWRENCE, KS) - In a continuation of the City's recycling programming,
the Utilities Department-Wastewater Division will begin its fall
biosolid land application program during the coming week. The City has
recycled biosolids, the nutrient rich organic solids removed during the
wastewater treatment process, since 1956.
The program moves biosolids from the treatment plant on Eight Street to
farm fields in Douglas and southern Leavenworth County. Liquid
biosolids are offered to local farmers as a fertilizer and soil
conditioner. Biosolids are very high in organic matter, which increases
the soil's water-holding capacity, adding texture to the soil, and
loosening clay soils.
The program will be completed approximately November 12, weather
permitting. The program, operated under the City's Department of
Utilities-Wastewater Division, has remained cost effective and is in
compliance with all state and federal regulations.
