Wakarusa Water Reclamation Facility
Public meeting kicks off water reclamation facility
The first of three meetings over a period of eighteen months to solicit public input regarding a new water reclamation facility south of Lawrence will be at 7 p.m. November 3 in the auditorium at South Junior High School, 2734 Louisiana. The City invites you to attend.
City and consulting staff will be on hand to provide a general overview of wastewater treatment processes; why a new facility is warranted; and what will be considered in identifying its location. Attendees will be asked to share their ideas on what's important to them in selecting a location for the facility and give input on the types of activities they would prefer to see surrounding it.
The project is in response to the recommendations of Lawrence's 2003 Wastewater Master Plan. This plan evaluated projected growth and the impact that growth would have on the wastewater collection and treatment systems. In considering the current level of wastewater flows being treated, how much that amount would increase, how the wastewater could be transported and treated, changes in State and Federal requirements, and that the existing plant is nearing capacity, it was recommended that a second water reclamation facility be constructed.
Wakarusa Water Reclamation Facility Public Advisory Committee (PAC).
The PAC will consist of 15-20 community leaders of varied backgrounds and will be co-chaired by Vice-Mayor Mike Amyx and Commissioner Mike Rundle.
