Metropolitan Planning Office Policy Board

The MPO is the official state designated entity to provide planning and programming services for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods consistent with the region’s overall economic, social and environmental goals. Special emphasis is placed on providing equal access to a variety of transportation mode choices (transit, bicycling, walking, automobile, carpool, etc.) and ensuring effective public involvement throughout the planning process. The MPO discusses transportation planning and related planning issues (e.g., land use) on a regional scale and makes transportation planning decisions and sets transportation planning policies for Lawrence and Douglas County.

The MPO performs its mission through three related activities and documents—the Metropolitan Transportation Plan, the Transportation Improvement Program, and the Unified Planning Work Program.
