2003 State of the City Address

Sue Hack was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and had the opportunity to live in Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and finally in St. Louis, Missouri, where she attended junior and senior high school. She entered the University of Kansas as a freshman in 1965 and graduated with a degree in secondary education in 1970. Following a brief return to St. Louis, she moved to Lawrence in 1971, and began teaching in the public school system at South Junior High School.

Sue's entire teaching career was at the junior high level where she taught English, Geography, American History and American Government. She was a classroom teacher in all four public junior high schools in Lawrence and retired from teaching 9th grade civics at Southwest Junior High. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she served as Student Council sponsor, Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsor, and assistant track coach.

Sue was interested in local issues and has served on several school committees, including curriculum, facilities, and bond issues. She also has worked with United Way as a building drive chair, and Friends of Hiratsuka as the educational coordinator. Her work with Friends of Hiratsuka has afforded her the opportunity to take students to Hiratsuka, one of Lawrence's two Sister Cities, on three separate occasions.

Sue was awarded the Lawrence Schools' Foundation Educator of the Year award for 1999 and the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year award for 1999. A graduate of the Leadership Lawrence Class of 2000, Sue is currently serving as the Interim Director of Leadership Lawrence and serves on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Her hobbies include needlework, gardening, and walking. Sue and Al have two children, Brian, and Anne.
