City accepting used bikes

(LAWRENCE, KS) - The Street Division of the Public Works Department is accepting

used bikes at its building, 1120 Haskell Ave. The new service is being offered

so that bikes in all states of disrepair can be collected and refurbished rather

than sent to a landfill. The community can take bikes to the Street Maintenance

Building weekdays from 7:30a.m. until 4:00p.m.

Collected bikes will be picked up by staff from the Lansing Correctional Facility

and delivered to the facility's refurbishing program. The donations will

complete a circle each May when the Rivercity Lions Club distributes refurbished

bikes at the Lawrence Helmet Fair conducted by the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire

and Medical Department.

In May 2003, the Lions provided bikes from the refurbishing program to thirty

Lawrence youth. City staff recognized the need to continue supplying used and

unwanted bikes to the program, so the Public Works Department identified a

collection and storage site and began accepting bikes.

"We are thrilled to support a program that recycles bikes. While the collecting

and storing might not be something normally listed as street maintenance duties,

we are happy to be the designated drop off site in the community," explains Tom

Orzulak, street division manger. The collection site could be busy after the

holiday season as children receive new bikes and need to dispose of old bikes.

Bikes in any condition and all states of disrepair can be dropped off at the

Street Maintenance Division building, during regular business hours. Street

Division staff will securely store the bikes until approximately 12 bikes are

collected then staff will contact Lansing Correctional Facility and request a

pick up.
